← Back to IdeasGen Z Isn't Contradictory—Modern Life Is: New Ogilvy Study Explores the Tensions Defining a Generation and How Brands Can Connect
NEW YORK, NY – July 28, 2026 – Gen Z has famously become a confusing cohort for brands and businesses to understand, having been described in news and headlines as everything from incompetent to hypocritical. Ogilvy Consulting has a different take: young adults are simply navigating new contradictions created by modern life.
Recognizing the urgent need for brands to realign with and better support this generation, Ogilvy Consulting today launched the 2026 Annual PULSE, revealing the structural forces shaping how Gen Z actually lives across four key tensions: how they manage energy, assert autonomy, build belonging, and negotiate presence.
Developed with consumer research platform Ideally, the study surveyed 2,100 Gen Z respondents across the US, UK, and Australia. Despite being one of the most researched generations in history, the data revealed that fewer than 30% of Gen Z believe brands truly understand them. The problem isn't a lack of data—it's that most research still treats Gen Z as a demographic rather than a generation adapting to fundamentally different conditions.
Over the last decade, adult support systems have collapsed, shifting responsibility onto the individual and forcing Gen Z to solve foundational life problems earlier and with less institutional support than those before them. These compounding modern pressures create competing needs—and not surprisingly, legacy marketing strategies are failing to land.
To close this gap, the 2026 Annual PULSE uncovers the new rules emerging for young adulthood, highlighting several critical shifts in how Gen Z operates:
-
Nearly 75% say belonging requires intentional effort or 'a lot of work' to maintain, challenging the assumption that community forms naturally in the digital age.
-
Only one in five Gen Zers want to make important life decisions entirely on their own. Around 80% actively seek guidance—but not someone else making the decision for them. Their biggest ask is for confidence that they're 'not missing something.'
-
One in four U.S. Gen Zers don't use generative AI at all. The finding challenges the assumption that young people automatically adopt every new technology, pointing instead to a generation becoming increasingly selective about where—and whether—they participate.
-
Across the US, UK, and Australia, sleep is the first thing Gen Z sacrifices when life becomes overwhelming, while work and school are consistently the last—revealing a generation protecting obligations before themselves.
-
Fifty-two percent of Gen Zers want more in-person social time – the appetite for physical presence is significant, consistent, and underserved.
While the tensions are universal, resolution strategies are culturally specific:
-
The US pushes through: Resolves tension through productivity, paying the cost in sleep and wellness.
-
The UK adapts: Resolves tension through social navigation, code-switching, and self-care.
-
Australia goes alone: Resolves tension through independence, deciding alone with a higher tolerance for digital ambiguity.
The Gen Z PULSE is not a typical trend report—it is a map. It serves as a strategic planning tool for marketers, business leaders, and organizations to bypass global, one-size-fits-all assumptions. By understanding today's challenges and realities, brand builders can design more nuanced and localized strategies that lower the friction of daily life and address their audiences' real-world constraints.
“Gen Z isn’t contradictory. They’re responding to a version of adulthood that asks them to manage more parts of life, with fewer default systems than any generation before them,” said Reid Litman, Director at Ogilvy Consulting. “The opportunity for brands isn’t simply to market aspirations. It’s to ease struggles, create belonging, and help young people navigate increasingly self-managed lives.”
