World War I’s Battle of Passchendaele took over half a million lives. Aside from the violence, lives were lost as pounding rain turned trenches into deadly mud traps. To commemorate this collective loss, Visit Flanders created the Mud Solider; a statue sculpted from the very earth where the battle took place. As rain fell, the statue slowly dissolved, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice so many brave soldiers made.
