Last year PewDiePie, the most popular personality on YouTube, also became the platform’s highest earning creator. And now he’s putting together his own “Avengers-style talent squad” in collaboration with Disney’s Maker Studios. PewDiePie, aka Felix Kjellberg, will be bringing a range of other influencers on-board the new multi-channel network, which goes by the name Revelmode.
“We’re thrilled to be doubling down with Felix,” says Courtney Holt, EVP at Maker. “He is an amazing talent, a great partner and the pulse of millennial pop culture. We firmly believe in his vision for Revelmode and his chosen creators — we can’t wait to see the possibilities ahead.”
In addition to fellow YouTube talent, Kjellberg has recruited creators from Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter whose styles and sensibilities mesh well with his own. So far this line-up includes gaming vlogger CinnamonToastKen, fashion and beauty personality CutiePieMarzia, and singer and comedian Emma Blackery.
“Revelmode is a shift in how talent can approach a digital company and work together for a common good,” says Kjellberg. “Together we will focus on creating — from one-off videos to original series to gamey games to animatoons, music, clothes, charity drives and more — really anything that’s awesome in the eyes of the fans.”
While multi-channel networks have been criticised by some creators for enforcing inflexible contracts and failing to adequately promote new content, Kjellberg is keen for Revelmode to be different, and he hopes one day to be able to offer opportunities to smaller YouTubers. “I think networks can be something very positive for everyone involved,” he says, “they should be something that helps channels on YouTube grow and reach their maximum potential.”
