Ripping Up The Rule Book

This week on social media we saw the unexpected play out. Leicester City’s incredible Premier League title win, defying 5000-1 odds. Larry Wilmore’s controversial White House Correspondents’ Association speech. The tech-inspired gowns innovating the Met Gala’s red carpet. True love found on Snapchat. For better or worse, rule books were tossed aside recently and social media responded. Will the week’s trend carry through to tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby? Only time will tell, but we’ll be tuning in with the rest of the social world — which you can bet is always changing. Here are this week’s highlights:

Biometric “Face Print” Data Causing the Platform Legal Problems

Facebook functionality allows them to tap into their photo tagging system to help identify user’s faces — developing a face print — suggesting tags for people when new photos are uploaded. Thursday, the network lost the first round of a suit that accuses the platform of unlawfully storing biometric data from user photos. Read More
New Study Shows Facebook is Preferred Network for Video Sharing
A small study from digital production agency Philo Media reports more than 37% of respondents prefer Facebook as their video source, with only millennials (35.66%) preferring YouTube over Facebook. 63.5% of respondents reported Facebook as their preferred platform for video sharing. Read More
ICYMI: Facebook is reporting the average user spends 50 minutes each day on its Facebook, Instagram and Messenger platforms (aka twice as much time as they do thinking, and more than 1/16th of the average user’s waking time). Read More


Timeline Tweets To Be Organized By What Your Friends Like 

Showing users tweets they might like isn’t new for Twitter, but this week Twitter revealed it will be improving its tailored suggestions functionality to bring users more tweets they might enjoy. Soon, Twitter will group tweets that your Twitter friends are engaging with and position them in your timeline in an organized, cleaner way. Read More

Search Better on Twitter

Hundreds of millions are sent each day, yet search and discovery on Twitter can still be lacking. Thursday, Twitter’s Director of Engineering announced efforts to improve both — taking another stab at the tech driving their search engine to make it better at identifying exactly what people are searching for across Twitter, Periscope and Vine (largely considered a key to Twitter’s future success). Vox Media Drives Future of Their Content with Snapchat-Specific Studio 

This week Vox announced it will build a studio dedicated to creating Snapchat for all eight of its brands including Re/code, Curbed and The Verge. Read More

Snapchat Platform of Note at the Digital Content NewFronts 

Although they didn’t present at the Digital Content NewFronts this week, Snapchat seemed to be everywhere. From notably driving 21% of BuzzFeed’s 600 pieces of daily content, to teaming up with Ellen DeGeneres for her new digital content network, Snapchat made news throughout the event. Read More
First Glance into Instagram’s Business Profiles
We’re getting our first look at Instagram’s new business/brand profiles — currently being tested among a small group of users. The new functionality includes a “Contact” button that offers directions to the business or the ability to email. Read More

Video Platform Targets Television Viewers with YouTube Unplugged 
YouTube is continuing to develop Unplugged, a subscription-based online video streaming service. The service would offer online video and live TV channels in bundles from media providers, and could be released as early as 2017. The service takes aim at current television viewers. Read More

LinkedIn Buys Content Distribution Start-Up Run Hop

Content strategy has become a heavy focus for LinkedIn, and they’re making measurable progress when it comes to user content creation and engagement. Content distributor start-up Run Hop, whose services find relevant content for users, was acquired by LinkedIn this week. Read More

Instant Articles Coming to LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is now considering bringing its own version of Instant Articles — originally a Facebook feature that delivers publishers’ articles directly within the app — to their platform. The feature could contribute to more time spent within the app and higher engagement rates. Read More


Save Live Streams For.Ev.Er. 

When Periscope launched, live streams broadcast on the platform disappeared 24 hours after the stream ended. This week, Periscope announced users can now #save their broadcasts, keeping their videos online forever. Read More

Offering New Metrics for Brands 

In an effort to offer advertisers more relevant insights about audiences and the performance of campaigns, Pinterest has partnered with Millward Brown to offer new metrics. Brands and retailers can now track brand awareness, favorability and purchase intent. Read More

BuzzFeed’s NewsFronts Presentation Drives Home Current Success

Monday, the platform held their NewsFronts event and presented advertisers with a few hard hitting facts; namely, they currently receive 7 billion content views a month, nodding to the future of video for the platform — with their “Tasty” network raking in much of the success (averaging 360 million users a month). Video Platform’s First Desktop App Released

Vine for Windows 10 is here! Vine released its first desktop app ever this week, allowing users to pin channels and accounts to their menus, as well as receive notifications and updates. Read More


Yubl Overtakes Skype, Pinteres and LinkedIn Apps in UK

New app to the scene, Yubl, is now fourth in Apple’s UK app store for social networks (a mere 10 weeks after launch). With Yubl, users can create animated and interactive posts and share with their friends. Read More
