WASHINGTON, DC, March 6, 2009 – Marcia Silverman, Chief Executive Officer, Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, was named the 2009 PR Professional of the Year at the PRWeek Awards, held last night in New York. Marcia received a standing ovation from the industry's top professionals for what may be the best honor this network has ever received.
PRWeek identifies Marcia as a leader, an advocate and a pioneer, noting in an article that, since she was named CEO of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide in 2002, she has pushed for growth at every level, more than tripling revenues and U.S. staff during her 27 years at the agency.
"When I joined Ogilvy, I did not think about whether this career path would be short on opportunities for women," she noted in her entry. "I simply rolled up my sleeves and became immersed in a profession that still excites and challenges me."
Marcia's eye for a changing marketplace led to a doubled presence in Asia, and new offices in Buenos Aires, Kolkata, Karachi, Milan and Tunis. But she has also maintained focus on the United States, where the staff retention rate is 84 percent.
As one of the industry's first female CEOs and presidents, "Marcia broke new ground in the industry," one judge said, "and demonstrated leadership that led to impressive results."
Already this year, she was recognized as a "Woman Who Means Business" by the Washington Business Journal. And last fall, Pink magazine named Ogilvy as one of its Top Companies for Women. Half of Ogilvy PR MDs are women – in consumer marketing, corporate, healthcare and research practices.
It has been an "outstanding career," said another judge, but Ogilvy's recent successes have made this past year a particularly "productive."
