NEW YORK, NY, June 11, 2009 – Shelly Lazarus, Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, is the recipient of the Advertising Educational Foundation's 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award.
The AEF's Lifetime Achievement award is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions to the industry. Lazarus, who has spent nearly four decades in the advertising industry, started her career at Ogilvy in 1971 as an account executive working on the Lever Brothers account. Under Lazarus's leadership Ogilvy has attracted some of the world's largest and most respected brands, including American Express, BP, Coca-Cola, IBM, Motorola and Unilever, among many others.
Paula Alex, AEF CEO commented, "Shelly Lazarus was the second woman to be elected to the AEF Board. We are delighted that she is the first woman to receive AEF's Lifetime Achievement Award."
Lazarus has been involved with the AEF since 1988. She was introduced to the AEF by former Ogilvy chairman Jock Elliott, one of the founders of the Foundation. She joined the AEF Board in 1993, becoming the second woman to be elected to the board and the only woman serving on the board at the time. She has also served as chairman of the American Association of Advertising Agencies.
Receiving her award at the AEF Honors Night held last evening, Lazarus credited the AEF's founders, advertising luminaries, Gene Kummel, Jock Elliott, Al Seaman and Bart Cummings for attracting her to the AEF: "I joined so I could be in the company of the greats who founded this organization and were on its board. I was star struck…and I still am…by the amazing people who are on the AEF board today."
In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, the AEF recognizes one outstanding representative company from each of the Foundation's constituencies – agencies, advertisers and media – for its accomplishments in promoting and supporting the advertising industry and the AEF mission.
This year's honorees include: Interpublic Group (Agency Award); The Coca-Cola Company (Advertiser Award); Hearst Corporation (Media Award).
