I am the Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific, and I have been with Ogilvy since 1993.
The most unique characteristic about my region is its size and diversity. It contains three of the most populated markets on earth, China, India and Indonesia; the most sophisticated digitalized market, Japan; the newest developing markets, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Pakistan; the "European" markets of ANZ (Australia and New Zealand); and the most proudly Asian of markets, Japan, India and Thailand.
Without the best talent we are next to nothing. Finding, nurturing and keeping the best and most diverse talent are the most critical parts of a manager's job – and mine. When we get it right we create a self-fulfilling virtuous circle: Our clients are better served and come back for more as well as recommending us to new clients; we create a stimulating work environment that satisfies our existing talent and attracts new talent. When we do this it is even more important than monetary reward to our people. And the best and the most productive people are those who share and stimulate each other. Talent and networking go hand in hand.
My favorite career highlight at Ogilvy was my first day. So many people went out of their way to welcome me and did so in a way that made me feel that they wanted me to be a good addition and that they would help me to be so. I have not been disappointed.
My favorite David Ogilvy quote is: "Our offices must always be headed by the kind of men who command respect. Not phonies, zeros or bastards."
